Ubisoft E3 2016 Conference Recap

Ubisoft celebrates its 30th birthday this year as a company. That’s 30 years of delivering creative, beautiful, imaginative and delightful game experiences. As well as some godawful ones. But hey, nobody is perfect. So this year at E3 Ubisoft came out with some sequels to beloved franchises, some creative new titles (especially for VR) and also some totally new games no one knew about. Unlike competitor’s, Ubisoft’s conference had a very informal tone as developers would come out on stage and sit on the couches and discuss their games with 5th time returning host Aisha Tyler (@aishatyler). So if you missed Ubisoft’s conference or just want a detailed list of the announcements then this list is for you. Enjoy!

Just Dance 2017 Announced, Dated and Confirmed for NX

Ubisoft opened their conference with a dance routine starring a giraffe, panda, lion and many other strangely dressed folks to announce the next game in their incredibly popular dance franchise. Just Dance 2017 will release on October 25, 2016, for all last gen and current gen platforms as well as PC. Ubisoft also became the first 3rd party publisher to announce a game in development for Nintendo’s next home console codenamed NX. Check out the seizure inducing trailer below!

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Wildlands Trailers and Details

The next Ghost Recon is set in Bolivia where a Mexican drug cartel has taken over and seized all the countries resources and started up mass production of cocaine. Players will take the role of a member of a tactical military team known as the Ghosts. The Ghosts are tasked with taking down the cartel and returning order to the country. The gameplay demo shown was very stiff and scripted but did showcase what a typical mission will feel like with 4 player online co-op. It feels like another generic third person shooter much similar to The Division or Watch_Dogs, two other Ubisoft titles. Whether or not Wildlands will offer a fresh take on this stale formula remains to be seen. Check out the trailer below!

South Park: The Fractured But Whole Trailers and Release Date

The sequel to 2014’s incredibly well received South Park: The Stick of Truth is tackling the superhero genre this time around. The children of South Park have gotten together to create a superhero cinematic universe and make their fortunes! But drama occurs when the children begin to fight over whose movie releases in which phase. This ultimately sparks a civil war that the children have to fight it out over. With South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone returning to write the script for this title, there is a lot of excitement. South Park: The Fractured But Whole will release on Xbox One, PS4 and PC on December 6, 2016, and all those who preorder will receive Stick of Truth for free! Check out the hilarious trailer below!

Tom Clancy’s: The Division DLC Detailed

Creative Director Julian Gerighty (@jgerighty) got on stage to talk about the DLC plans for Ubisoft’s record-breaking third person shooter. As a part of the “Year One” plan that Ubisoft has for The Division DLC the next piece of content is called Underground and will take players to a new part of the city where they must fight to stay alive in the harsh winter environment. The third piece of “Year One” DLC will be The Last Stand and is set to release in the Winter later this year. It was also revealed that new skins from other Ubisoft games will be made available. Costumes from WildlandsSplinter Cell and Rainbow Six Siege will be available to existing Division players through Ubisoft Club.

Eagle Flight VR Gameplay Demo and Details

The first of Ubisoft’s two VR projects shown at this conference was Eagle Flight VR. Set 50 years after nature reclaims the earth, players assume the first person perspective of an eagle flying through the overgrown cities competing against other eagles for food. These competitions take the form of capture the flag style matches between teams of 4 trying to take the target back to their nest. Eagle Flight VR is set to release in 2016 for PS4 and PC.

Star Trek: Bridge Crew Announced

Ubisoft’s second VR title lets Star Trek fans finally realise their dreams of being a crew member on the bridge of a starship. Similar to Eagle FlightBridge Crew is a cooperative VR experience. Players will choose between captain, engineer, helm and tactical officers. All the officers have to work together to ensure success. The demo shown had Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Karl Urban (Dr Bones McCoy in the J.J. Abrams films) and LeVar Burton (Geordi LaForge) playing together to defeat a Klingon vessel. Bridge Crew is set to release in 2016 on PS4 and PC. Check out the gameplay demo below!

For Honor Trailers, Release Date and Details

Ubisoft Montréal’s For Honor received mixed previews at last year’s E3 but people seem to be warming up to the game this time around. Creative director Jason Vandenberghe (@the_darklorde) got up on stage and showed a story trailer as well as an extended gameplay demo which had the Vikings attacking a samurai fortress. For those unaware For Honor is a third-person action game set in an alternate history where Vikings, Knights and samurai are all placed in the same place due to an earthquake that shifts the continents. These three factions then enter a war that lasts for hundreds of years. It sounds quite silly and the gameplay appears to be equally uncompelling. Players use a fighting system that appears very similar to Crytek’s Xbox One launch game Ryse: Son of Rome where players used a combination of light and heavy attacks with blocking to defeat enemies. For Honor is set to release on February 14, 2017. Check out the gameplay trailer below!

Grow Up! Announced and Release Date

Ubisoft Reflection’s Grow Home released as a PlayStation Plus game in February of last year to loads of critic and fan love. People adored the cute and lovable B.U.D. as well as the gorgeous low poly world through which they fumbled. Grow Up! is a sequel in which B.U.D. now has the freedom to fumble around a whole planet in search of plants and treasures. Producer Pete Young showed off loads of cool new features for the upcoming title. Check out the trailer!

Trials of the Blood Dragon Announced and Available Immediately

A mash up between the super successful dirtbike racing Trials series and the Far Cry 3 spin-off Far Cry: Blood Dragon results in the most ridiculous, 80s inspired trailer I’ve ever seen. Trials of the Blood Dragon combines the dirtbike tricks of Trials with the gun combat of Blood Dragon to create a unique hybrid of side-scrolling mayhem. It’s available on all platforms now but you can check out the reveal trailer below!

Assassin’s Creed Movie Trailer and Discussion

Director Frank Marshall (@LeDoctor) joined Aisha Tyler on stage to discuss the upcoming Assassin’s Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender. Apparently, a significant chunk of the movie will take place in the present day leading many to wonder what will the focus be? Assassin’s Creed hits theatres worldwide December 21, 2016.

Watch_Dogs 2 Gameplay Trailer and Release Date

Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot came out on stage to show off Ubisoft’s 2016 flagship game. The original Watch_Dogs released in 2014 to very mixed reviews. Many didn’t like the main character, Aiden Pearce, due to his overly serious attitude and uncompelling story. The sequel appears to be taking a much lighter tone with a new main character set in the city of San Francisco. This time around players will be able to hack drones, electric cars and much more.

The new main character Marcus Holloway is an African American who joined the hacker group Ded Sec to fight back against rising corporate control. Marcus also uses his experience being profiled because of his skin colour to help combat other acts of racial profiling in the city. With a new and exciting city, a compelling character and fresh visuals and mechanics Watch_Dogs 2 is shaping up to be a wonderful game. Watch_Dogs 2 launches worldwide on all platforms November 15, 2016. Check out the gameplay trailer above!

Steep Announced and Dated

In traditional Ubisoft style they ended their conference by announcing a new AAA title. Ubisoft Annecy studio manager Rebecka Coutaz and creative director Igor Manceau took the stage to reveal and discuss their upcoming extreme sports game Steep. In Steep players compete against other online players on leaderboards and in real time in various extreme sports like skiing, wingsuit flying and snowboarding. Set in the French Alps (right in Ubisoft Annecy’s backyard) players race down real mountains and ranges. Steep is set to launch in December of this year. Check out the reveal trailer below!

That’s a wrap! What did you think of Ubisoft’s conference? What were your favourite announcements? Let us know in the comments below!

  1. Not sure if it is a sign of the other Ubisoft games not hitting the mark but the only game I am excited for here is South Park haha. For Honor could have some potential but I will have to see more and hopefully try out a beta to get my hopes up.

    1. South Park does have the most mainstream love, fans of the show can’t tell the difference between the show and the game they look so similar. For Honor is a tricky one, I don’t like the story or the yelling angry warrior stereotype. If the combat can offer something fresh and the online components aren’t the majority of the game I might reconsider. How do you feel about Watch_Dogs 2 or Wildlands?

      1. They did go full angry yelling warruor with that game now that I think about it haha. So Wildlands just feels to generic to peak any interest and I don’t have much faith in shooters from Ubisoft after trying the The Division out. For Watch Dogs 2 I never played the first one and the style of gameplay plus story just doesn’t peak my interest

      2. That’s fair, the first Watch_Dogs was very much a proof of concept, much similar to how Assassin’s Creed 1 was the proving point to make way for Assassin’s Creed II. In that regard I’m very excited for Watch_Dogs 2 as it appears to be taking what players loved from the first (hacking, driving and third person stealth) and getting rid of everything players didn’t like (overly serious story, brooding main character).

I never played the original South Park but this one appeals to me because it’s mocking the superhero genre and I love mocking the superhero genre 😛

      3. Well if the improvement is as big as AS1 to AS2 then that would be a promising and enjoyable game!
South park has mocking things down to a science so I’m expecting many hilarious moments haha
